There are a few questions that have plagued humanity since we have been on Earth. Why are we here? Is there a higher power? Are we alone in the universe ? And of course: What kind of dog is Scooby-Doo?
Okay, we may be the only ones to have asked ourselves that last question, but that doesn’t take away the mystery. Luckily, we have fantastic investigative skills, so we set out to answer that question once and for all. Scooby Doo is most likely a Great Dane, even though it has very different characteristics from the true breed. Keep reading to find out why it’s not that simple!
Scooby Doo ” dog ”is not a Great Dane?
Most people think Scooby Doo is a great dane. After all, he’s clumsy, cowardly, and spends his time daydreaming while eating – which actually sounds quite similar.
According to Scooby-Doo creator, Hanna-Barbera artist Iwao Takamoto, he imagined the perfect Great Dane and then gave his creation all the opposite characteristics.
So, does that make Scooby a Great Dane or an anti-Great Dane? Or is it something entirely different? Let’s take a closer look to find out.
What do we know aboutb ” dog ” Scooby Doo?
We don’t watch as much television as we do without learning a few things about Scooby Doo. In fact, we even went so far as to put together a little dossier on our favorite cartoon dog:
Real name: Scoobert Doo. It’s a strange name for a Great Dane, especially when it comes to a professional one.
Size: This is a tricky question. He comes up to Sammy’s shoulder when he’s seated, and Sammy seems to be tall. We’re going to say that Scooby is at least 6 feet tall on his hind legs. That’s big for a Great Dane, but it’s not impossible.
Weight: On the one hand, he spends most of his time eating. On the other, he spends the rest of his time cowardly fleeing danger. Overall, it looks quite slender, so it can be said that it weighs around 50 kg. That’s a little light for an adult male Great Dane.
What do they look like?
According to the American Kennel Club, Great Danes are “the epitome of elegance and poise, they have the supple, flowing gait of noble birth.”
Scooby Doo, on the other hand, often runs in place for several seconds before flying off in a flash. In addition, his knees often bump loudly together, especially when frightened, and he makes a very peculiar piercing cry when he stops running.
None of this suggests elegance, poise, or a noble gait.
Great Danes also come in several “official” colors: merle, brindle, fawn, blue, black, brindle and harlequin. Brown is not mentioned with some liver-colored spots on the back.
How do they behave?
The AKC claims that Great Danes are spirited, courageous, and never shy. He also claims that “those who mistake the kindness of the breed for its gentleness will encounter a powerful enemy, endowed with true courage and a determined spirit”.
Scooby Doo usually hides from danger in wicker baskets.
To be fair to our cartoon friend, most Great Danes don’t have to deal with ghosts, monsters, goblins, and other unexplainable demons.
However, after three or four instances, Scooby should have known that it wasn’t really a monster he was dealing with – just the creepy hotel concierge, Mr. Wickles.
In contrast, Great Danes and Scooby Doo are both friendly and affectionate, there’s no denying that.
Are they smart?
According to Stanley Coren, professor of canine psychology at the University of British Columbia, Great Danes are ranked the 12th most intelligent dog.
According to us Scooby-Doo teachers at YouTube University, Scooby-Doo is the second-smartest member of the Mystery, Inc. team after Velma.
Sounds like a compelling argument for Scooby being a Great Dane!
